Greek and Latin Summer School (25th June - 13th July 2012)

Introduction

The Greek and Latin Summer School, organised by the Department of Classics and Italian Studies of Bologna University, offers intensive courses in Greek and Latin with the aim of enabling students to read some of the fundamental texts of our cultural tradition. Further classes will touch on moments of Classical literature, Greek and Roman history and history of art, supplemented by visits to museums and archaeological sites (in Bologna and in Rome).

The courses will be held in Bologna from 25 June to 13 July 2012 and are open to students (undergraduate and post-graduate) and non-students alike: no specific qualification is required for course admission. Students must be aged 18 or over.

Classes

The school offers Intensive Classes in Greek language and Latin language (44 hours) at two different levels (beginners and intermediate) for both languages and an additional Classical Literature Class (11 hours). It is also possible to combine two language courses (Latin & Greek) at a special rate. The skills acquired after one course are expected to be equivalent to a Semester study: please refer to the link on this page for a detailed syllabus.

Classes will be held from Monday to Friday in the Department of Classics and Italian Studies (Dipartimento di Filologia Classica e Italianistica) of the University of Bologna (via Zamboni 32, 40126 Bologna).

Cultural programme

Cultural activities (5 hours) will supplement language knowledge in order to familiarise participants with Italy and Classical culture through visits to the city of Bologna and its museums and historical sites.

All teaching and activities are in English.

Weekend in Rome

An optional weekend trip to Rome includes a tour of the city and visits to archaeological sites (like the Roman Forum, the Coliseum and the Palatine) and some of the most remarkable collections of Roman art (such as the National Museum of Rome: Palazzo Massimo at the Baths of Diocletian and Palazzo Altemps).

Thanks to a special agreement with the Faculty of Arts, Bologna University students, ERASMUS students (in Bologna for the year) and former ERASMUS students (to Bologna) can register at a discounted fee.

Accommodation

Students who need accommodation can easily find a place at the Residenza Universitaria di Studi Superiori (http://www.residenza.unibo.it/strutture/index.php?l=en) at a 10 minute bus ride from the Department of Classics and Italian Studies.

Certification and credits

In order to obtain the course certificate, the attendance of at least 70% of the course hours is required. A final test is scheduled and a pass will grant 5 ECTS (9 ECTS for both courses).
